PHRASAL VERB FRIDAY: 'DROP BY': meaning and examples

Welcome back for the last lesson of this week's Daily Vitamin! For Phrasal Verb Friday, we are looking at the phrasal verb TO DROP BY

Definition 1: to visit someone for a casual meeting.

Example 1: We will drop by this afternoon to say hi.

Example 2: I dropped by my mom's house to give her some flowers.

Definition 2: to visit unexpectedly.

Example 3: Guess who dropped by the house today? My old friend, Sara!

Example 4: I dropped by, but you were not home.

This verb can be transitive (like Examples 2 and 3) or intransitive (like Examples 1 and 4). This is an inseparable phrasal verb. So, we cannot "drop the house by" we can only "drop by the house". ;-)

That's all for this week. Next week is the beginning of December, and we are doing something different for The Daily Vitamin for that month. Tune in to see.

Until then, have a great weekend!
