TO WIND UP (1): meaning and examples

Good morning,

Today we are continuing our look at meanings of and expressions with the verb TO WIND.

Today's verb is: TO WIND UP

Meaning: to finish or end up in a situation, state or place.

Example 1:
I fell asleep on the bus and I wound up in the outskirts of the city, when I had intended to get off in the city centre.

Example 2:
Vicky: Do you remember Paul from the marketing department?
Brenda: Sure. He doesn't work here anymore, does he?
Vicky: No. He wound up working for the competition and now he's the vice president of the company!
Brenda: No kidding! I always knew he was a talented guy.
