TO PRESENT: meaning and examples

Good morning,

Yesterday we saw the noun PRESENT in the context of gift-giving as a synonym for the word GIFT. You may also know this word as a verb that refers to 'giving a presentation'. Today we are going to look at another meaning for the verb TO PRESENT.

Meaning: to give somebody something (such as an award, a certificate or a gift of recognition) in a formal or ceremonious way.

Example 1:
The company CEO presented Richard with a gold watch when he retired.

Example 2:
They will present the students with certificates of completion at the graduation ceremony.

As you can see, you may be giving presents during these holidays but it's unlikely that you'll be presenting somebody with an award.
