RIP-1: meaning and examples

Hello everyone. I hope you had a good weekend.

This week we are going to study some expressions with the English word RIP.

Before looking at expressions, let's first look at the basic meanings of the word RIP.

Meaning 1 (verb): to tear something or to become torn, often suddenly or violently.

Example 1:
When I climbed over the fence, I ripped my jeans.

RIP can also be a noun.

Example 2:
She has a very long rip in her dress, but she doesn't realise it. Should we say something to her?

Meaning 2 (RIP adverb / preposition): to remove something quickly or violently, often by pulling it.

Example 3:
The carpet was ripped from the stairs?

Example 4:
When he arrived home, he ripped off his tie. (= He took it off very quickly)
