TWIST-1: meaning and examples

Good morning everyone. I hope you had a nice weekend.

This week we will study the English word twist. The basic meaning of twist is "to bend or turn something into a particular shape or position that is not natural." (In Spanish the equivalent verb would be retorcer or torcer.)

We can twist physical things, or we can twist facts (today's meaning).

Today's expression is: to twist the facts / information

Meaning: to deliberately change the meaning of what someone has said, or to present facts in a particular way, in order to benefit yourself or harm someone else.

Example 1:
The politician's speech was very effective, but he twisted the facts about the economy.

Example 2:
Please listen carefully to what I'm saying. You always twist everything I say to sound more negative than it is.

Example 3:
The magazine was accused of twisting the facts.
