BENEFIT (REVISION): meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today's word is: benefit (noun)

Meaning 1: extra money or advantages that you get in addition to your salary as part of your job.

Example 1:
In the US many employers offer workers private health insurance as part of the job benefits.

Meaning 2: the advantage you get from a situation.

Example 2:
There are several benefits to moving out of a big city: a friendlier atmosphere, less pollution and lower costs.

We can also use benefit as a verb with this same meaning (to benefit from something).

Example 3 (verb):
We have definitely benefited from moving out of the city. For one thing, we paid much less for our flat.

Meaning 3: government money for people who are ill or unemployed.

Example 4:
I'm sorry, but you're not eligible for unemployment benefits because you didn't work long enough in your previous job.

BE CAREFUL: The translation of the Spanish word beneficio (term. financiero o comercio) is profit, NOT benefit.
