LEAVE-1 (LEFT): meaning and examples

Good morning everyone. I hope you had a nice weekend.

In October of 2006, we looked at the word leftovers. Leftovers are the food that remains at the end of a meal after you have finished eating. Leave and left ("left" is the participle of "leave") are used in various expressions which we will look at this week. (There is also the word "left" which means the opposite of "right", as in izquierda and dercha in Spanish. I am not referring to this use.)

Today's expression isto be left

Meaning: to remain to be used, sold, eaten, etc.

In Spanish this is often expressed with the verb quedar.

Example 1:
Is there any coffee left? I'm really tired and I have to finish the final budget.

Example 2:
How many tickets are left for the concert?

Example 3:
They are fighting to save what is left of their business. The crisis has really hit them hard.
