PULL EXPRESSIONS-3: meaning and examples

Hello. 

Today we continue our look at interesting expressions in English that use the verb pull.

Today's first expression is: to pull out all the stops

Meaning: to make every effort possible to achieve something.

Example 1:
The travel agency pulled out all the stops to impress us; and the truth is, we were very impressed with the service. I will recommend them to all of my friends.

Today's second expression is: to pull the strings (for someone)

Meaning: to use your influence in order to get an advantage for someone. Those who pull the strings, control the events or the actions of others.

Example 2:
I'd like to know who is really pulling the strings in this country. I think we all know that it's not the politicians.

Example 3:
I don't know how he was hired as CEO. I think someone must have pulled some strings for him. He has no idea what he is doing!
