SOAP OPERA: meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today we look at another expression that came up in the Ziggurat Breakfast Club that took place a couple of weeks ago.

Today's expression is: soap opera

Meaning: a story about the lives and problems of a group of people which is broadcast every day or several times per week on the television or radio. (= telenovela or culebrón)

Example 1:
She spends her afternoons watching soap operas on television. What a waste of time!

They are called soap operas in English because the first soap operasperas de jabón) were sponsored by soap companies, such as Procter and Gamble.
