TO BLUFF: meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today we look at another word that came up in the Ziggurat Breakfast Club last Saturday.

Today's word is: To bluff

Meaning: to try to make someone believe that you will do something that you do not really intend to do, or to act as if you know something that you don't really know.

This word is especially common in the game of poker. When you bluff in poker, you deceive an opponent, betting a lot of money even when you don't have good cards, with the hope that the opponent withdraws.

Example 1:
The terrorists have threatened to kill the hostages, but the police think that they are bluffing. I hope they are right.

Example 2:
My brother is an excellent bluffer. Whenever I play poker with him he wins. He bets a lot of money while keeping his poker face and I never know if he is bluffing or if he really does have a good hand.
