YA QUE: meaning and examples

Good morning,

I hope you had a great weekend! Today we are going to answer the following question that we received from one of our Daily Vitamin readers:

"Cuando en español dices 'ya que', en inglés puedes usar 'as' y 'since', pero no sé si siempre se puede usar los dos conectores indistintamente."

Meaning: The reader is correct. As and since are both used as connectors to indicate reason; both words are synonyms of because. Because is the most frequent of the three but as and since are also quite common. (Note: As and Since have other meanings, too. We'll cover that in a later Daily Vitamin.)

Example 1:
I'm going to call a taxi because / as / since I'm running late.

Example 2:
Because / As / Since she speaks fluent French, she was asked to show the visitors around the city.

Example 3:
He wrote to us because / as / since he had a question about the grammar.

I hope this helps to clarify the meaning of 'ya que', but if you have doubts or questions please leave us a comment in the Daily Vitamin section on our website.

Enjoy the rest of your day!
