DISCUSSION vs. ARGUMENT: meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today we look at the difference between discussion and argument in English.

Meaning of Discussion: A conversation about something.

Meaning of Argument: a conversation or discussion in which two or more people disagree, often angrily.

The translation of the Spanish word discusión would be argument in English, NOT discussion.

Example 1:
After a detailed discussion about our offer, they decided to accept it.

Example 2:
She got into an argument with the teacher, and the teacher asked her to leave the classroom.

A discussion is neutral, an argument denotes a conflict. However, we often say things like heated discussion, to mean the same as an argument, or a conversation that includes conflict.

Example 3:
After some heated discussion, a decision was finally made.
