HOLIDAY SONGS (IT'S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR): meaning and examples

Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin everyone!

It's our third day of Holiday Songs, and today we are looking at the #3 Christmas song of all time, according to a list from Billboard Magazine. It is "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year." This is a popular Christmas song written in 1963 by Edward Pola and George Wyle. It was recorded and released that year by pop singer Andy Williams for his first Christmas album, The Andy Williams Christmas Album. Today we are looking at the word GAY.

Definition of GAY: Happy; in a good mood.

Example 1 (from today's song): It's the hap-happiest season of all / With those holiday greetings and gay happy meetings / When friends come to call

Example 2: It was a gay party.

This is the older definition of the word GAY. Today, it is almost exclusively used to define a person's sexuality (GAY = homosexual). And it can also be a woman's name in English. But you will still see and hear the word GAY in older songs, books, and movies used to describe a happy person, thing, or event.

And here are the full lyrics to the song:

It's the most wonderful time of the year
With the kids jingle belling
And everyone telling you be of good cheer
It's the most wonderful time of the year

It's the hap-happiest season of all
With those holiday greetings and gay happy meetings
When friends come to call
It's the hap-happiest season of all

There'll be parties for hosting
Marshmallows for toasting
And carolling out in the snow

There'll be scary ghost stories
And tales of the glories of
Christmases long, long ago
It's the most wonderful time of the year

There'll be much mistltoeing
And hearts will be glowing
When loved ones are near
It's the most wonderful time of the year

There'll be parties for hosting
Marshmallows for toasting
And carolling out in the snow

There'll be scary ghost stories
And tales of the glories of
Christmases long, long ago
It's the most wonderful time of the year

There'll be much mistltoeing
And hearts will be glowing
When love ones are near
It's the most wonderful time
Yes the most wonderful time
Oh the most wonderful time
Of the year

Tomorrow is a bank holiday in Spain, so there will be no Daily Vitamin; we will see you on Friday for our last lesson of the week.
