THEME THURSDAY: WORDS FROM BRANDS (KLEENEX): meaning and examples

Hello to you all!

For our April Theme Thursday posts we will look at words that come from brands. These words are the names of products or companies, but the names slowly became the words we use for this product, even when we are using a product made from a different company.

We are beginning by looking at the word KLEENEX

Product: Kleenex is a registered trademark of Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc. It has become a genericized trademark for facial tissue, especially in the US. Kleenex is often used to blow your nose or to dry your eyes.

New definition of Kleenex: any facial tissue fabricated by any company.

Example 1: Could you please pass me a Kleenex

Example 2: This movie is really sad. I think we need to get the Kleenex before we watch it.

Many languages have these branded words. What are some in your native language(s)? Tell us on our Facebook or Twitter pages.
