On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan

Following you will find a review written by a Ziggurat student.
The story is about the wedding night of Edward and Florence, a young couple from England in the sixties. Edward and Florence have very different backgrounds: she is a passionate violinist who belongs to a wealthy family and he is a country boy who had studied History. Their little sexual experience, the constant misunderstandings and the different expectations about marriage cause a dramatic situation.
McEwan describes human behavior and feelings in a way that makes it easy to identify with the characters. Though it is a short novel, the text is very poetic and sometimes I had to read some paragraphs several times to understand them totally.
About the author AIan Russell McEwan was born in Aldershot, England, on 21st June 1948. He is a Booker Prize-winning English novelist and screenwriter.
