Belfast – it’s the craic!* Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland, and is now one of the most vibrant European cities. The ‘troubles’ (the conflict between Catholics and Protestants) are finished, and Belfast, despite only having 250,000 inhabitants, is full of theatres, galleries, shops and restaurants. Don’t miss the spectacular Irish coastline either. And the Northern Irish people will make you feel very welcome in their city. A highly-recommended weekend escape. Fish and chips…in Barcelona! There are many typical British foods, but the most famous and most popular across the country must be fish and chips. Fried cod (bacalao) with big chips (patatas fritas), and usually served with mushy peas (un puré pastoso de guisantes). They are usually take-away (eat at home) and the restaurant where we buy them is called a ‘chippy.’ Now, Barcelona has its own chippy. Traditional fish and chips and all the extras in the middle of the Raval. Fish&Chips, Rambla del Raval, 26.
Literary suggestion. The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway. This is Hemingway’s first serious novel and was published in 1926. The novel is a powerful insight into the lives and values of the so-called “Lost Generation.” An American couple and some friends leave Paris to visit the San Fermines in Pamplona. In the party atmosphere of the fiesta, there are new passions, new jealousies... A modernist masterpiece, this is a remarkable book which captures the atmosphere of 1920s Europe.
This is a fascinating insight into young people’s lives at the time. Highly-recommended, and suitable for students with an upper-intermediate (B1) level or above.
