JUST-8 (EWV)

Hello again,

Hoy acabamos nuestro repaso de expresiones que utilizan la palabra inglés just. Y hoy también es la última Essential Weekly Vitamin antes de las vacaciones. Volveremos el 17 de septiembre.

Today's expression is: just now

Meaning 1: at this moment.
(en este momento)

Example 1:
Can you please call me back in 10 minutes? I'm busy just now.
(¿Me puedes llamar dentro de diez minutos? Estoy ocupado en este momento.)

Meaning 2: during this present period.
(ahora; durante el presente período.)

Example 2:
Despite the crisis, business is good just now. Perhaps people are spending more now because they know that the VAT will increase in July.
(A pesar de la crisis, el negocio va bien ahora. Quizá la gente esté gastando más ahora porque saben que el IVA subirá en julio.)

Meaning 3: a very short time ago.
(hace muy poco tiempo; justo ahora)

Example 3:
Rachel: Excuse me, do you know where Janet is?
(Perdona, ¿sabes dónde está Janet?)
Jack: I saw her just now; I think she was going to the library.
(La he visto justo ahora; creo que se iba a la biblioteca.)

Si tienes alguna pregunta sobre el contenido de la Essential Weekly Vitamin de hoy, por favor pon un comentario en la sección de la Daily Vitamin en nuestra web (www.ziggurat.es), clicando en el botón "Add a Comment".

I hope you have a wonderful day and a great summer!

TIPS FOR MAINTAINING YOUR ENGLISH IN SUMMER

Good morning.

Tomorrow's Essential Weekly Vitamin for Spanish-speaking learners of English will be the last Daily Vitamin until Monday, September 13th. Therefore, today I wanted to take this opportunity to encourage you to make a plan to stay in contact with English this summer.

If you are a Ziggurat student or are registered for the ZigSpace, these months might be a good time to:

1) review and revise the more than 1000 Daily Vitamins that we have created since October 2003.
2) listen to Daily Vitamin sound files to improve your pronunciation and listening skills.
3) do the monthly activities that we have created, which will help you to consolidate the content covered for each month.

Some time ago I had a student return from summer holidays with a stronger level than when he left. (This is a true story!) During the summer he read in English, watched films and DVDs in English and went to Scotland with his family (among other things). There is no reason not to improve your English in the summer.

For some suggestions about how to stay in contact with English in the summer, see the document at the following link:

http://www.ziggurat.es/bank/doc/docums/Fresh%20Summer%20English.pdf

We also encourage you to browse the resources section of our website at the following link:

http://www.ziggurat.es/es/recursos_ingles.asp

Have a great summer and we'll see you on September 13th.

PROFIT (REVISION)

Good morning everyone.

Today's word is: profit (noun) or to make a profit (verb).

It means: the money you make by selling something or the money that a company has after it has paid its business costs.

Example 1:
The profits from the sale are going towards (se destinan a) helping the victims of the recent tsunami disaster.

Example 2:
We're never going to make a profit if we don't raise prices or cut costs.

REMEMBER: The translation of profit to Spanish is beneficio, so don't confuse the words profit and benefit in English (see yesterday's Daily Vitamin).

If you have any questions about today's Daily Vitamin, please post your comments by clicking on the "Add a Comment" button in the Daily Vitamin section on our website.

Have a great day!

BENEFIT (REVISION)

Good morning.

Today's word is: benefit (noun)

Meaning 1: extra money or advantages that you get in addition to your salary as part of your job.

Example 1:
In the US many employers offer workers private health insurance as part of the job benefits.

Meaning 2: the advantage you get from a situation.

Example 2:
There are several benefits to moving out of a big city: a friendlier atmosphere, less pollution and lower costs.

We can also use benefit as a verb with this same meaning (to benefit from something).

Example 3 (verb):
We have definitely benefited from moving out of the city. For one thing, we paid much less for our flat.

Meaning 3: government money for people who are ill or unemployed.

Example 4:
I'm sorry, but you're not eligible for unemployment benefits because you didn't work long enough in your previous job.

BE CAREFUL: The translation of the Spanish word beneficio (term. financiero o comercio) is profit, NOT benefit.

We'll look at the word profit in tomorrow's Daily Vitamin. If you have any questions about benefit, please post your comments by clicking on the "Add a Comment" button in the Daily Vitamin section on our website (www.ziggurat.es/es/lecciones_ingles/index.asp).

Enjoy the rest of your day!
